Taking the Sugar out of the mix and keeping the best...

The modern workplace is almost unrecogniseable from that of, say, 30 years ago. It's no longer acceptable or even legal, in some cases, for certain languages or behaviours to occur in the professional business environment.

Forget the fantasy of The Apprentice - even Sir Alan Sugar doesn't buy into the full-on Your Fired! Alan Sugar 'management style' once the cameras stop rolling - these days, senior managers have to acknowledge a plethora of HR laws, best practice, and the realisation that the secret of success is atttracting and keeping the best - and brightest staff. This means career progression plans, achievable objectives and, most importantly, competetive salaries.

Amazingly, though, bigotry, sexism and bad management practices still abound. In the Brave New World talked about in John O'Hanlon's artice Don't leave me - yet it's made clear that such companies won't survive.
