Korean electronic manufacturing giant Samsung has admitted that its notebook computer division is suffering and its operations may cease by 2011.
The company has announced that unless it is able to triple its market share to eleven million laptops per year within the next three years it will consider stopping laptop manufacture altogether.
In order to sustain the company’s operations, Senior Manager of Overseas Sales & Marketing Sukyong Hong told UK tech journalists that Samsung would need to increase its market share from 1.7 percent to 5.7 percent.
Complete rethink
Mr Hong indicated that a complete reworking of Samsung’s laptop strategy would be necessary if this is to be the case. This would involve bringing practices into line with the company’s mobile phone strategy, which comprises a worldwide selling platform with a wider array of models at lower prices.
At present, Samsung only sells its notebook computers in ten countries worldwide – a fraction of the markets where it sells its mobile phones.
