Houston, We Have a Solution!

CEO, Mashi Rahmani explains how MMC leveraged NASA know-how to provide end-to-end human resources services in the medical, legal, and business sectors.

Mashi Rahmani began his career at NASA, providing administrative expertise to scientists on the Apollo-Soyuz and Space Shuttle programs. In his ten years with NASA, Rahmani developed and honed the skills that he used to turn MMC into a specialized, multi-million dollar human resources management company.

NASA’s creative administrative structures were an inspiration. Rahmani’s work orders came from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, but a company in up-state New York signed his paychecks. The benefit was clear: outsourcing human resources functions allowed NASA scientists to focus on their specialties, while the contractors took care of logistics.

“I asked myself, ‘Why don’t I use the same model for the private sector, or more specifically for physicians?’ Most doctors would rather give full attention to curing their patients than managing human resources issues,” explains Rahmani. This was the business model that inspired Rahmani to found MMC, Inc., as a company offering end-to-end human resources management to the medical sector. MMC has since grown to become a multi-million dollar company providing outsourced human resources solutions to medical, legal, and business professionals.

End-to-End Solutions

MMC’s human resources solutions are truly end-to-end. The company provides complete payroll services, business consulting, employee counseling and labor dispute resolution, workers compensation insurance services and risk management, OSHA compliance review, employee healthcare, along with employee welfare discounts and related benefits, including financial investment counseling.

And as MMC has grown to managing the human resources needs for more than five thousand employees, it has leveraged its size to negotiate low-premium insurance rates for hundreds of client-employers. The company also provides compliance training and seminars to the general public, employee training and safety guidance, electronic-based time-keeping solutions, and a website packed full of information about maximizing employee relations.

MMC also offers priceless risk management security. “As labor and tax laws become more complex, the more daunting the task of being an employer in the United States and dealing with employee issues becomes,” Rahmani says. “Our clients realize the pros for having someone else manage these issues and appreciate our expertise.

“MMC manages time-tracking functions to a fine science so that we are aware of employees’ actual work hours and time-off activities. This is critical when an on-the-job dispute arises due to discipline for taking too much time-off, for example. For our clients, all of the relevant data for resolving employee questions and issues is close to hand.

“Our claim to fame is that in 25 years we have not gone to trial for any workplace claims. This is because we tend to resolve issues in an amicable and professional way,” Rahmani says.

MMC also offers reviews and seminars discussing OSHA and labor law compliance issues, while their website tracks changes in laws that affect employers. MMC’s business model is not confined to the health care sector. 25 percent of the company’s clientele consists of non-health care businesses – from legal firms to insurance professionals. From “Mission Control” in Los Angeles, MMC has nurtured relationships with more than 400 clients in 22 states.

The Delight Factor

It is understandable that many physicians tend not to trust service providers and vendors, says Rahmani. “Everyone seems to have an angle for going after the healthcare providers who are making a lot of money, and taking a bite of that,” says Rahmani. MMC’s reputation for reliability creates trust. That trust gives medial practitioners the confidence to hand their human resources administration over to MMC. MMC goes to special lengths to ensure that adverse economic conditions, such as the increased insurance premiums that swept across the United States in the wake of 9/11, do not impact upon its clients.

“In most cases, if an insurance or employee benefits vendor increases its fees, we assume the burden. Vendors and service providers may increase their fees, but we aim to keep our charges low so that our clients avoid experiencing much of the pressures which typically face entrepreneurs,” says Rahmani. As a result, the average MMC client has enjoyed a relationship with the company that has lasted at least ten years, compared to the average client relationship of just one year that most of MMC’s competitors boast.

“We are viewed as a ‘yes’ company. We say “yes” to every client’s and potential client’s needs. We are designed to be a boutique organization that customizes our offerings to meet each client’s needs,” says Rahmani. Rejecting the “cookie-cutter” approach taken by many of its competitors is not “just good business ethics but is also good business,” says Rahmani. “We aim to thrill our clients,” Rahmani continues. “Make them love what we do, and if they fall in love with what we do, they won’t go anywhere else. We subscribe to a delight factor. Satisfaction is not enough. We want our clients to be delighted with our approach.” No wonder MMC enjoys such a stellar reputation.

Global Expansion

MMC’s comprehensive offerings have already attracted the interest of government – at home and overseas. The company worked with former U.S. Secretary of Health Tommy Thompson to provide the human resource solutions for the Women’s Hospital of Kabul, Afghanistan. MMC has also had a hand in developing after-school programs around the U.S., supported the establishment of homes for young Russian refugees in Israel, and served as an advisor to the Minister of Health for Uganda. A Chinese delegation approached Rahmani to bring their outsourcing program to the province of Zhangiang – an offer only possible with the right kind of technological platform.

The company is currently implementing the technological platforms necessary for international expansion. Scheduled for launching on January 1, 2008, a customized SAP software solution will enable the development of high-tech networks between MMC and its international clients.

“That [SAP] will bring all our different programs under one umbrella,” Rahmani says. “And with the implementation of SAP, we are hoping to expand our wings to take on the global market.” Mr. Rahmani goes on to say, “If you provide our kind of service, with a high level of professionalism, and stay in cutting edge mode, you can maintain an impeccable reputation with a force that no one can compare with. You will receive heavenly support.”
