Looking to a sustainable future

Right now you’re probably expecting me to once more bemoan the global economic recession and present a cup overflowing with doom and gloom. And I could do so with great ease – the falling price of the dollar, the credit crisis, economic disaster: these have all been reported ad infinitum. It would be so simple: It’s been a continual theme; a looming shadow, a vulture that swoops and circles high above, waiting for what seems like an inevitable decay. But let us not dwell on negativity – far too much time has been dedicated to that already.
Instead, I wish to look to what comes next – far beyond the immediate, the next few years – and look at how the construction industry is set to change. Sustainability and “green” ideals, once a statement of fashion, have become a statement of intent. Companies that wish to move forward are forced to think sideways and come up with innovative ways to stay ahead: looking at renewable energy sources, lowering emissions, increasing efficiency.
This has been touched upon briefly, here and there: various mentions and comments littered across news stories and case studies all over the website, but I feel much more attention is required than that. This isn’t simply a fleeting phase: this is the future. And companies in the construction industry must either embrace it, or get washed away in the next wave of economic crisis.
