Diageo plc has said that net sales of Guinness grew six percent in a recovery that saw the stout outperform the UK market.

The beverage company saw a year of strong organic growth, helped by its global reach as it reported that net sales were up seven percent, while operating profit recorded a nine percent rise.

Smirnoff vodka and Johnnie Walker whisky both performed well as Diageo continued to invest in high-profile advertising campaigns.

Over 50 percent of Guinness’ growth came from Africa, where other beer brands saw sales increase 25 percent.

During the year, Diageo added Ketel One vodka, Zacapa rum and Rosenblum cellars wine to its brand range, which already includes Baileys, Captain Morgan and Cuervo.

Chief Executive Paul Walsh said: “Our financial results in recent years have mirrored the consistent improvement we have achieved in our business and we finish the year with a stronger business.”
