The Prime Minister, Tony Blair, left the House of Commons at 12.40 following his last Prime Minister's questions.

MPs from all parties paid tributes to Mr Blair for his achievements over the last ten years, including the Leader of the Opposition, David Cameron, who concluded his remarks with a disarming expression of goodwill to the Blair family. Even the alarming Dr Ian Paisley stood up to express his satisfaction that 'progress has been made in Northern Ireland - not as much as I would have liked perhaps. but progress nevertheless', to credit Mr Blair with that and to draw a parallel with his future peacekeeeping role in the Middle East.

Blair was fed by his supporters with opportunities to acknowledge the prudence of his successor Gordon Brown in funding education, the healthcare sector, and in managing the economy over a decade. Later this afternoon Mr Blair will tender his resignation to the Queen and shortly after that Mr Brown will follow him, to kiss Her Majesty's hand and assume the office of Prime Minister.

Exec Digital will look forward to announcing who will be joining his deputy, Harriet Harman, in Mr Brown's Cabinet.. The Guardian expects Alistair Darling to be his successor as Chancellor, with Ed Balls at the Department of Trade & Industry, and John Denham at Work & Pensions. However the Guardian, like most of us, thought Alan Johnson would be appointed deputy leader.
