Exec looks at two of the new offerings from high end audio and video manufacturer Bang & Olufsen.

Exec has been looking at the best in new technology for a few months now, so it’s unbelievable that we haven’t yet got round to anything from Bang & Olufsen. Here, we’ve redressed that oversight by giving you the rundown on two of their latest products.

DVD 2

David Lewis is undoubtedly one of the world’s best designers, and the 68-year-old Brit is proving again and again that he is still at the top. With this twin DVD player/recorder with hard drive, he has managed to inject some life back into what was fast becoming a jaded market.

Typically, it’s fiendishly expensive for a non HD DVD/Blu-Ray player, but a good set of features and the all important Bang & Olufsen ‘wow’ factor just about make up for it. The inclusion of Guide Plus+ TV recording is a definite bonus (as is the 250 GB hard drive), and its stunning looks mean it will slip easily into the B&O home cinema setup that the Danish firm are hoping you already own.

B&O isn’t known for 3G mobile phone technology, so wisely it’s asked Samsung to step in and provide the internet-enabled bells and whistles on its new MP3 player/mobile hybrid. The set-up works perfectly, allowing B&O to do what they do best; make beautiful objects with the best sound quality around.

Now for the iPhone comparisons. Firstly, it looks better. Unsurprisingly, it sounds better too. But where Apple wins out is with its software; iTunes makes the bundled BeoPlayer program seem clumsy and disjointed, and the iPhone’s touch-sensitive keyboard is, surprisingly, a more efficient way of texting and emailing than the Serenata’s click-wheel.

In short, buy it as a mobile/music player hybrid and you won’t be disappointed. But if you’re out to replace your Blackberry, then maybe it’s worth looking elsewhere.
